Consulting Services for Research in Life Sciences

No matter the phase of your research, I can deliver quality input as a statistician: from the planning stages of your project all the way through data collection, analysis and interpretation, as well as during the peer review process of your manuscript publication.

Study Design

Accurate planning and design for lab experiments and clinical trials to ensure optimal statistical power in answering your research questions

Data Driven Hypothesis Generation

Each data-driven finding leads to further questions that deepen our understanding of the problem complex and may pave the way for new research

Biomarker Signatures

Using molecular data to identify biomarkers and pathways relevant to disease development and progression in order to identify possible treatments

Prognostic & Predictive Modeling

Employing advanced statistical models for patient prognosis and survival probability to help doctors in choosing the optimal treatment option

Analysis of Molecular Data

Leveraging immense amounts of information from molecular data for better patient profiling, treatment and personalized care

Subgroup Identification

Finding subsets of patients to further our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of certain diseases and to improve diagnosis as well as patient treatment

Validation & Reproducibility

Ensuring publication quality and reproducibility via statistical validation methods, fortifying  obtained results and making them applicable beyond the data set at hand

Publications

Communicating research findings is integral to any researcher’s career. Make sure to consult a statistician early in the process.

Each Project is Different

Depending on your research question and the data at hand, different statistical approaches are required. Get in touch and let me know how I can support you in addressing the specific goals of your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Depending on a client’s needs it is possible to choose between the following two options:

  • Project package with fixed price: This option is most appropriate for well-defined projects with concrete analysis plans and foreseeable outcomes. This would be the case, for example, for statistical services regarding a randomized phase 3 clinical trail requiring sample size calculation, interim analysis and final analysis according to the statistical analysis plan.
  • Flexible order with hourly rate: This option is best suited for projects of a somewhat exploratory nature where the data analysis steps are only roughly predetermined, and the direction changes depending on insights and limitations of the data. This could be the case in the analysis of molecular data and development of biomarker signatures.

I mainly work remotely, as this does not require the client to provide a working space for me. Yet experience shows that face-to-face meetings are often very productive, and as such I make use of opportunities to visit a client in person when the project allows.

I am located in central Germany near the beautiful town of Heidelberg. This allows for easy transit to clients located in major cities in the area, such as Mannheim, Frankfurt, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Karlsruhe, etc.

I will gladly provide support to improve your manuscript and ensure scientific quality from a statistical standpoint. It is to be noted, however, that depending on the scope and depth of the paper this may turn out to be a substantive task. As such, adequate time should be planned in.

I am fluent in both English and German. The desired statistical reports and my manuscript contributions can be in either of these two languages.

Yes, in an initial consultation we can discuss the scope of your project and determine how I can provide assistance. This meeting can be in person or via phone/skype and is entirely free of charge.

Yes. My previous consulting experience has shown that young researchers can very much benefit from even a few hours of discussing their project with sparing partners who bring statistical know-how into the mix. This exercise can help streamline the end-to-end process from experimental design through data gathering, analysis and results interpretation. Another major advantage is that common misconceptions and pitfalls can be addressed early on in the process and hopefully avoided all together.

If required, I can also provide support on how to do the actual data analysis using statistical software and how to interpret the results to derive clinically relevant insights.

The presentation of obtained results and their publication is of course at the discretion of the study investigator. If a manuscript is to be submitted to a scientific journal based on a shared project I would like to be named as co-author. It can be beneficial for the manuscript peer-review process to have a statistician among the authors to provide a form of quality assurance and ensure that reviewer comments regarding statistical aspects will be addressed adequately.

All statistical analyses are conducted and the resulting reports are written using the statistical software package R (open source) and the reporting tool knitr. This ensures reproducibility through code and environment conservation, resulting in high quality standards for publications.
